Safety Monitors, Safety Carpenters, and Jobsite Safety Practices 

 

SUMMARY:

 

Construction Safety Managers are accountable for the jobsite safety on the assigned project; and have primary safety responsibility and drives safety accountability on the jobsite alongside the jobsite Superintendent and Project Management.   

 

Primary responsibilities include enforcing policies that will create and maintain a safe workplace.  Must have excellent attention to detail to identify hazards.  Working with the project team to discover opportunities for improving conditions and execute various safety programs.  Coordinates with Superintendents, Foremen, Project Managers, Carpenters, and Client regarding the safety plan.  The Safety Manager is also responsible for building effective relationships and problem solving with the project team members, general contractors, and subcontractors.  This position is field based.  Successful candidates must display exceptional written and oral communication skill.  

 

The incumbent must have the ability to work different shifts and long hours (8-12 hours), when necessary.  Weekend work and extra hours occur according to production.  

 


 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Execute health and safety plans in the workplace according to legal guidelines.
  • Enforce policies to establish a culture of health and safety.
  • Evaluate practices, procedures, and facilities to assess risk and adherence to the law.
  • Conduct training and presentations for health and safety matters and accident prevention.
  • Monitor compliance with policies and laws by inspecting employees and operations.
  • Review inspections of, and/or inspect, equipment and machinery to observe possible unsafe conditions.  
  • Investigate accidents or incidents to discover causes.
  • Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities, or new prevention measures.
  • Report on health and safety awareness and issues.  
  • Perform all roles & responsibilities of a Safety Monitor, as the Safety Manager, or through assigned surrogates.  
  • Review GC Contracts and Contractual Scope of Work to ensure all contractual safety requirements are met and complied with.
  • Supervises & trains Safety Monitors and Interns regularly. Review their quality and progress of work while providing them with tools and sharing safety and construction knowledge and experience with them to guarantee growth.
  • Analyze, manage and mitigate risks within the day-to-day operations of construction, and well as relations with the client, employees and subcontractors.
  • Acts as an interface between KD and the general contractor, and subcontractors while maintaining a positive, professional working relationship with all parties.
  • Foresee and forecast potential safety hazards and concerns within the project and take the necessary steps to rectify or notify appropriate parties of these issues to protect KD.
  • Responsible and accountable for the safety of all co-workers and any other incumbent encounters.
  • Authorized and obligated to stop work on any task or series of tasks whenever an unsafe condition or situation is anticipated or observed.
  • Reports violations of applicable laws, regulations or Company policies and procedures promptly, and is subject to appropriate disciplinary action (including dismissal) for failure to do so.
  • Performs other related administrative and technical duties that may be assigned or requested by immediate supervision (such as certification training, safety training, procedure review, etc.).


 EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Minimum 4-year work experience in Safety and/or Construction. 
  • OSHA 30 is required, OSHA 510 is preferred.
  • Supervisor or Manager experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of building products, construction details and standards.
  • Ability to read construction plans.
  • Leadership and management skills.
  • Experienced in crisis management and able to perform in high-stress situations.
  • Must have the ability to use judgement and discretion when making decisions in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with others.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office and Procore preferred.

 

PHYSICAL / MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

 

The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment, if required to work or visit the jobsite.  This may include hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, personal flotation devices, or other equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

 

The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstances of the incident and as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel.  Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner, should an emergency situation arise.  

 

In addition, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
